Sexuality, Relationships and Your Rights

A free book about sexuality and the law for people of all abilities.

Sexuality, Relationships and Your Rights (SRAYR), is a picture-based, Easy English resource for teaching people about their rights and the law related to their body, health, relationships and sexuality.

Research shows that people with disabilities are at more risk of both being victims of sexual crimes and, often accidentally, perpetrators of crimes. From a sex positive and person-centered approach, this resource aims to empower individuals (and the people that support them) to know how the law can support or protect them from these experiences.

The Sexuality, Relationships and Your Rights (SRAYR) resource has information about sexuality, sexual health, and relationships. It tells people about their rights and the law. It also tells people options about their body and about getting help. The SRAYR resources uses Easy English and pictures to explain the text.

From a sex-positive and person-centred approach, the SRAYR resource aims to empower people to know more about:

  • their social and legal rights,
  • their health and relationships,
  • their sexuality and sexual health,
  • and how the law can support individuals before and after difficult experiences.

This is important because research suggests people with disabilities experience a higher risk of:

  • being victims of sexual crimes,
  • or accidentally doing crimes.

National Versions of SRAYR

Due to the success of the WA version of SRAYR, SECCA received a second government grant to expand the resource across Australia.  Each Australian state/territory has its own version of the resource tailored to its specific laws and needs.

SECCA has collaborated with peak organisations across the country which work in the space of sexuality, disability, justice and advocacy. These bodies have worked generously, providing feedback, discussion and community insight to ensure each local version is the best it can be.

Sexuality Relationships and Your Rights Website

SECCA has created an online resource about sexuality and the law for people of all abilities. This website is tailored to each state and territory, and includes information from the Sexuality, Relationships and Your Rights book.

SRAYR’s History

In 2002 SECCA produced a 21-page print version of what has become the SRAYR. This was transformed in a big update in 2019. This version covered a more topics over more pages. It had a new layout and images. This version talked about Western Australian law only.

The SRAYR resource is now being expanded. New versions for each Australian state and territory have been made. These versions are specific to the laws and language in each of these places.

The changes in SRAYR have been made together with many people and organisations. This has helped change and add content. The new expanded versions of the SRAYR resource versions are just over 100 pages and have been printed. They will also be available online, both as a website and to download as a document. A national version of the SRAYR resource content will also be made into animations.

WA Version of SRAYR

SECCA released the current version of its landmark SRAYR book in 2019.  We saw an overwhelming demand for a fresh resource that addressed sensitive and critical information relating to sexuality and the law today.

This version incorporates Western Australia’s laws, and the social and language changes that have taken place in the 17 years since the first version was released.

Consultation with many community organisations led to a number of new sections being added including: dating, sex work, internet safety, sexting, gender identity and pornography. The new resource has hundreds of new illustrations — and has grown from 25 pages to over 100 pages long!

Provide feedback

We would love to hear your feedback about your experience using the Sexuality, Relationships and Your Rights resource.

The survey will take about 10–15 minutes to complete and, if possible, should be completed alongside the person you are supporting or have used the resource with. It’s really important for us to hear the opinions of people with disabilities and others who use this resource.

John struggles to engage with people because of his background and disability.  He was referred to SECCA for help with setting boundaries and developing skills to build healthy relationships.
